Family History

Thanks to my cousin Frank McQuade for all his hard work in putting together our family history. Frank made a trip to Italy a while back and did a lot of research. What follows are excerpts from his research.

Our family can be traced back to the province of Catanzaro in Calabria, Italy. That is where the earliest know members of the Tomanio and Marinaro families lived. There is a little village called Tomaino where the earliest identifiable member of our Tomanio family was born circa 1800, Marco Tomaino. One of Marco's children, Maria Tomaino married Stanislao Gualtieri (born 1834). He was from unknown parentage or orphaned at an early age. Stanislao and Maria had five surviving children: Felici, Carmela, Virginia, Palmerina (born 1871) and Charina (born 1865).

Palmerina married Severio Tomaino and Charina married Antonio Tomaino (born 1862). Antonio was the son of Francesco Tomaino and Maria Tomaino. Antonio and Charina had seven surviving children: Maria Giuseppa, Maria, and Francesco born in Italy. The last four were born in the United States: Bernardo, Giuseppe, and Felici.

Antonio had come to the United States prior to 1899 and later summoned his wife, Charina his children Maria Giuseppa, Maria and Francesco and his father in law Stanislao. The five came to America via Ellis Island in 1899. Shortly after Ellis Island the name Tomaino was Americanized to Tomanio. The family settled in the town of Danbury, Ct.
